a medieval minute: puppetry

Watching a puppet show.

The church used puppets to portray stories of the Virgin Mary. The word “marionettes” comes from these puppets. The church gradually banned puppets, and the performers began presenting shows outside of churches. Traveling minstrels sometimes presented shows with glove puppets. The subjects might include Greek and Roman legends, Bible stories, and medieval romances.

About medievalphyllis

I love history and I love writing. I've been working on an historical novel about a medieval viscountess, Ermengarde of Narbonne since 2009. It has been quite a journey and the journey isn't over. Previously I written 6 historical novels for kids, but this is a new challenge.
